Summertime is well under way in the Mid-Atlantic Region – and that means plenty of long, humid days ahead. Although most of us have eagerly awaited the arrival of summer, our homes are not always prepared for these muggy months. If you haven’t already done so, you may be considering upgrading your room air conditioning (or no A/C at all) to something more efficient and effective – like central air conditioning.

As you probably already know, there are several types of air conditioning available for homes. Many older homes still utilize window units or through-wall solutions. While these systems are still popular, and fairly inexpensive, they are by no means the most efficient way of cooling your home. Here are three reasons why a central air conditioning system may be the best solution for your home:

1. They’re more energy efficient. Window units are great for small spaces, like hotel rooms or studio apartments. However, in terms of cooling an entire home, they’re a waste of energy and money. Because of their size, they’re not very powerful – and this means you need a unit in practically every room in your home. New central air systems utilize much more modern technology and are built to higher energy efficiency standards.

2. They do more than just cool. Central air systems are great for humid Mid-Altantic summers because, in addition to cooling your home, they also dehumidify your living space. Less humidity means a more comfortable season – and fewer restless nights. With drier air, you can also turn up the thermostat a few degrees without any loss of comfort since dry air feels cooler than moist air.

3. They’re unobtrusive. Window units – especially older systems – can be quite an eyesore. They’re shaky, loud and detract from the aesthetics of your home. Central air conditioning, on the other hand, is practically undetectable. Because the main working component is located outside, it won’t affect the style of your home.

Of course, the best part about central air conditioning is the money savings. By conserving energy, and utilizing a more effective method of cooling, you’ll likely see significant money savings this season.
