Strategically situated in Central Delaware, Dover serves the dual role of state capital and county seat of Kent County. According to 2010 U.S. Census data, the city’s latest official population count stands at 36,047, making it the second-largest city in the state. The city, which comprises an approximate total land mass of 26,000 square acres, is one of the few in the Northeastern U.S. that continues to experience economic, population, and geographic growth. Having started with an official land area of just 125 acres in 1717, by 1960, the city had grown by close to 1,000 acres.

Founded in 1683 by William Penn, who named the new town after the town of the same name in Kent, England, Dover has come a long way since its early days. The city, which today is governed according to the mayor-council governmental model, is now a thriving residential, commercial, and industrial center with a stable infrastructure, which includes four school districts, five colleges, and two libraries. Local weather patterns in the area feature four distinct seasons and a humid subtropical climate, which brings hot, humid – almost tropical – summers and mild winters. Snowfall in the area is relatively light (with a 19-inch annual average), and snow generally melts quickly. Rainfall levels are fairly uniform throughout the year, with an average annual rainfall total of 46 inches. Spring typically yields wetter weather than autumn, and, interestingly, autumn can often bring comparable – and sometimes even higher – average temperatures than spring. Average July high in this region is 87 degrees F to January’s average low of 27 degrees.
