History

Founded by Robert Marshall, the community was developed to be a residential area that provided easy rail access to Washington, D.C. Marshall endeavored to keep the area’s natural beauty central in all development, emphasizing the features of the land in creation of streets. The subdivision was created in 1918, but the actual incorporation of the town didn’t take place until 1931. Cheverly’s area is a mere 1.27 square miles. The community is located within a mile of Washington, D.C., near the northeastern border. It is bordered by Maryland Route 50 and the Baltimore-Washington Parkway. It is characterized by abundant vegetation and beautiful landscaping.

Based on the 2010 U.S. Census results, the town of Cheverly has a population of 6,173 with just over 50 percent male and just over 49 percent female residents. 23.6 percent of the population is over the age of 18 while 8.5 percent of the population exceeds 65 years of age.

Statistics for ethnicity include 57.1 percent black, 10.5 percent Hispanic and 32.4 percent white. The town has an educated population with more than 91 percent of adults over the age of 25 holding high school diplomas and more than 44 percent having received post-secondary degrees. Median income statistics in the 2010 U.S. Census exceeded $78,000 while only 7.4 percent of the population fell below the poverty line.

Magruder Spring Park provides an intriguing historic site, used in 1814 by the British in their march on Washington.
