6996 Columbia Gateway Dr STE 202 Columbia, Maryland 21046
Columbia is a planned community made up of 10 small villages in Howard County, Maryland, and is also a Census designated place (CDP) that includes parts of several surrounding cities. Under the umbrella of the Columbia Association, each village is operated by its own community leaders. For the community’s well-organized design, great schools and abundance of recreational opportunities, Columbia consistently makes the top ten in Money Magazine’s annual list of the 100 “Best Places to Live” in the United States.
History
The land that would become Columbia was purchased under the direction of developer James Rouse during the first half of the 20th century. Rouse’s dream was to create a self-contained community that would avoid the uneven development prevalent in other areas of the country. The plan was revealed to county residents in 1963, zoning was approved for the project in 1965 and the community opened for business in 1967.
Geography
Columbia lies amidst the rolling hills of Maryland’s Piedmont region and encompasses around 32 square miles of land. The community has three artificial lakes and maintains more than 3,500 acres of open green space.
Weather
With a humid subtropical climate, Columbia experiences warm summers with daytime temperatures averaging around 88 degrees Fahrenheit. Winters are cool to cold. The average low temperature in January is 25 degrees. Columbia receives an average of 47 inches of rain each year.
Attractions
Columbia’s master plan was designed to center around The Mall of Columbia. With its popular shops, restaurants and 14 theaters, the mall remains a favorite community destination. Other attractions in Columbia include:
- Designed by architect Frank Gehry, the Merriweather Post Pavilion has been the region’s premier amphitheater for concerts and festivals for more than 40 years.
- Founded in 1980, the African Art Museum of Maryland is one of only three museums in the country devoted to showcasing the art of Africa.
- The first phase of the 300-acre Blandair Park is now open and features 25 acres of playing fields, bleachers and playgrounds.
- The beautifully maintained Fairway Hills Golf Club is a public golf course that caters to beginner to intermediate golfers.
