Dedicated to Serving Hagerstown MD and Surrounding Communities

Hagerstown, Maryland, population 39,662, is the largest city in Western Maryland and the sixth largest in the state. The county seat of Washington County, this semi-rural city is nonetheless a thriving commercial, industrial, and transit center that serves as the major hub for the Greater Tri-State Area, which comprises significant portions of Western Maryland, South Central Pennsylvania, and West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle. As a result of its centrality, as well as its importance to the economies of these areas, Hagerstown has earned the well-deserved nickname “Hub City.”

Founded in 1762 by German immigrant politician, farmer, fur trader, and gunsmith Jonathan Hager, “Hub City” was originally called Elizabethtown, in honor of Hager’s wife, Elizabeth Kershner. But, in 1813, the city’s name was changed to Hagerstown in recognition of its founder and his success in helping the town become the seat of the newly formed Washington County. Because of the instrumental role he played in the creation of the new county, Hager also became known as the “Father of Washington County.”

Today, Hagerstown is considered the gateway to the Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, and due, in part, to its strategic location at the crossroads of Interstate Highways I-70 and I-81, continues to enjoy its unique place at the center of government, recreation, and commerce for a significant portion of the tri-state area.

Hagerstown offers both residents and visitors a wide variety of area attractions and events, which provide diversion, add a rich layer of cultural complexity to the overall experience of the area, and illuminate the history of “Hub City” – including the town’s fascinating “hidden history.” The sheer diversity of the leisure and recreational opportunities available in this illustrious Maryland travel destination make it every bit as popular among local residents for richly rewarding “staycations” as it is among eager out-of-town tourists, who invariably enjoy memorable, fun-filled visits.

Because the city is situated between two climate zones – the humid subtropical zone and the humid continental zone – area summers are typically hot and humid, with winters yielding moderately cold temperatures. July highs generally rise into the mid- to upper 80s F with lows in the mid-60s, while January temperatures feature average highs in the mid- to upper 30s and lows in the low 20s. From May through September, the town’s temperature generally stays within a fairly comfortable range, making these months some of the best times to visit the area.
