– The Gresham House

The Gresham House was built by John Gresham II in 1686. However, the land on which the home was built was owned by Capt. Edward Selby. Gresham rented the land until 1765, when the Gresham heirs finally bought the property. The historic home was briefly owned by a pirate named William Cotter. The home was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Historic London Town and Gardens

London Town was once a thriving colonial town. Some of the town’s structures have been restored to their original splendor for visitors and residents to enjoy. Several locations provide hands-on educational experiences, circa 1750-1760, for visitors. London Town tours include the William Brown House, Lord Mayor’s Tenement, the Carpenter Shop and the famous Historical Gardens.

London Town was originally established in 1683. The town was a hub of economic activity during the late 1600s and early 1700s. London Town covered 100 acres of land offered a ferry crossing and a thriving tobacco port. London Town reached its peak population of over 300 in 1720. The American Revolution slowed the economy and the small port town began to disappear. Few buildings survived through the years. The William Brown House, built in 1760, was one of the few structures from the era that stands today.
